Old Town (Vieux Nice)

Wander through the winding, narrow streets of Nice’s Old Town and allow yourself to be transported back to the France of times gone by. Along the way, take in the sights of the historic district, from beautiful churches such as Cathédrale Sainte Réparate and Chapelle de la Miséricorde, to family-run restaurants and independent shopping boutiques. Sitting alongside the promenade and close to the tramlines, it’s easy to reach the Old Town from anywhere in the city.

Once you arrive, take your time exploring the quaint Baroque pathways before going to the Cours Saleya market where you’ll find colourful flowers, fresh fruits and second hand treasures. The fish market, which is open in the mornings from Tuesday to Sunday, is also worth a visit.

When you get hungry, there’s plenty of cafés and restaurants serving up traditional food. Don’t leave the Old Town without trying the popular local snack socca (chickpea pancakes) and remember to visit the famous Fenocchio ice cream parlour to try some of their unusual flavours.

At night, the Old Town comes to life with lively bars and nightclubs, so stay until the evening and relax with a cold beer as you soak up the atmosphere before partying until the early hours. If you’re leaving the Old Town before sunset, go for a relaxing walk along the green Promenade du Paillon toward Promenade de Anglais on the seafront, take a five minute stroll to the port or climb Castle Hill for the best views of the city.
