Take a stroll around the town of Mahon

Mahon has more to see than you might expect of a small island capital, and a walk around the historic centre is the best way to take it all in. When you're following the little old streets between leafy squares, take a look at the buildings around you as they're an unusual mixture of Menorcan and British, including grand Georgian townhouses. Make sure you walk through the Arch de San Roque as well. The last part of the medieval town wall that's still standing, this gate tower is said to be the oldest building in Mahon.

You can see even older relics in the Museu de Menorca, whose exhibits range from the ancient history of the island and the local shoemaking heritage to a large collection of fine art. If art's your thing then you should also take a look at the portrait gallery at the town hall and the artworks in the beautiful Esglesia de Santa Maria, although more people visit this church to hear its famous organ with a grand total of 3,210 pipes. There's a short concert at 1pm every Monday to Saturday.

When you need a break from sightseeing, take time out in one of the many pavement cafés, enjoy a cold drink and sit and watch the world go by.
