Gerona

Nestled in the hills of northern Spain, the historic Catalonian city of Gerona (also spelt Girona) is a popular base for nearby holiday spots but also makes for a fantastic place to explore on its own. Its historic architecture and colourful riverside buildings have given it a reputation as a miniature version of its Catalan sister Barcelona (just 60 miles south of the city). And now, with its student population and offering of cosmopolitan cafes, bars, restaurants and art galleries, it’s a hub of Mediterranean energy.

The city was built beside the River Onya and is made up of a winding maze of cobbled streets dotted with Romanesque and Gothic buildings and churches. Its past has seamlessly merged with its present with many of the medieval buildings in the Old Quarter, known as the Força Vella (Old Fortress) beautifully restored and converted for modern facilities. The city is best enjoyed on foot where you can really appreciate the ancient architecture.
